ITINERARY - 2011 RUNNING STRONG ANNUAL RESERVATIONS TOUR
September 11-17, 2011

SUNDAY

Our tour begins with Running Strong National Spokesperson and Olympic Gold Medalist, Billy Mills, who will join us to share his amazing life story and to prepare you for the week ahead!  We will stay in Rapid City on Sunday night.

MONDAY

We will begin our journey by visiting beautiful Bear Butte, one of the Seven Sacred Sites with great spiritual significance to the Lakota people.

After this we will drive to the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, where we will visit one of our signature youth programs, the Cheyenne River Youth Project® and their youth center for kids ages 4-12 known as the Main (Billy Mills Youth Center)

We will tour their 2 ½ acre children’s garden known as Winyan Toka Win (Lakota for “Leading Lady”)   and visit Ċokata Wiċoni, the Cheyenne River Youth Project® Teen Center.

We will spend Monday night in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

TUESDAY
After breakfast in Eagle Butte, we will continue to the Takini School, a K–12 school on Cheyenne River that is home to our weekend backpack food program.

From there we will travel to Sturgis, SD for lunch before returning to Rapid City, where you can decide whether you want to take a free optional trip to Mt. Rushmore or enjoy an evening on your own in Rapid City.

We will stay in Rapid City on Tuesday night.

WEDNESDAY
First, we will make our way to the Crazy Horse Memorial to enjoy one of the most impressive spectacles in South Dakota.

Then, our journey will continue to the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary just south of Hot Springs, SD.

Then, we will head to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the birthplace of Billy Mills.

Our first stop will be at the Slim Buttes Agricultural Development Program’s base farm, which helps families across Pine Ridge start their own vegetable gardens. Here we will meet with community leaders and enjoy a traditional Lakota meal.

We will spend Wednesday and Thursday and Friday nights on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

THURSDAY

Thursday morning, we will pay our respects at the Wounded Knee Memorial before heading to our Tipi Waste (Wellness through a Good Home) Food distribution warehouse in Porcupine.

Here we will also learn about our Homes for Heroes program and visit a prototype house.  After lunch we will visit one of Running Strong’s many water wells.

After this we’ll learn some Oglala cultural teachings, including the meanings of different traditional dances in preparation for a community Wacipi (powwow) celebration on Friday evening.

FRIDAY

On Friday we take the tour to Fort Robinson State Park, the site of the 1879 Cheyenne Outbreak and the death of famed Sioux Chief Crazy Horse.

We’ll visit the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, NE before making our way back to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for a Wacipi (powwow) celebration.

SATURDAY
After breakfast the group will travel to the magnificent Badlands National Park before heading back to Rapid City to visit the Journey Museum before the tour comes to an end.

Although the tour officially ends on Saturday evening, Running Strong provides hotel accomodations the night of Saturday, September 17th at no additional cost.

GENERAL TOUR INFORMATION

Rommates
Running Strong will match roommates when possible. Roommates will be placed together based on gender and smoking/non-smoking room preferences.

Unfortunately, at times not every roommate request can be fulfilled. If for some reason you are not matched, single travelers will need to pay the difference of a single room versus a double room. There is no opportunity to "unroommate" once you have been matched.

Roommates will be provided with one another's contact information before the tour begins.

Responsibilties

The operation of the Running Strong Annual Reservations Tour depends upon the sensitivity and personal conduct of each participant. Running Strong reserves the right to refuse to accept or retain any person as a tour participant at any time. While Running Strong strives to meet the needs of tour participants, participating individuals, in turn, must be physically independent.

All itineraries are tentative only. Modifications are occasionally necessary due to weather, schedule changes and other unforeseen factors. Running Strong is not responsible for changes in itinerary and refunds will not be made based upon avoidable changes in itinerary or scheduling. However, every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary as stated in the tour information packet.

Baggage is owner's responsibility at all times. In the event that the tour is cancelled, Running Strong should have no responsibility beyond refunding monies paid to it by its participants. Running Strong assumes no responsibility for injury, delay, damage, loss or accident to any of its participants. A statement and confirmation of your reservation will be sent to you upon receipt of your tour registration and payment.

Diet, Smoking, & Restrooms

Vegetarians and persons with special dietary needs may have some difficulty finding adequate food choices.

Weather & Packing

In September, the mornings and evenings are crisp and chilly in the Northern Plains states. However, the days can get hot with temperatures in the 80s or 90s.

To ensure your comfort, pack casual clothes and dress in layers which can be taken off or put on as the temperature fluctuates along with comfortable walking shoes.

Some days may be hot enough for shorts, but we advise you to bring a sweater, fleece, or jacket as well for possible chilly days and evenings.

Storms have a tendency to roll in off the the prairie quickly so please bring rain gear. A Running Strong umbrella will be provided to all participants.

Walking

While there is not a lot of walking, comfortable shoes that you can wear all day are highly recommended.

The following sites will include some walking: Wounded Knee Memorial, Sim Buttes base camp and farm, program sites, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and the museums. Also, our tour will include frequent stops and many "on and off" the bus situations, as well as periods of standing.

Unfortunately, most places on the reservation are not handicap accessible, so wheelchair use is not possible.

Staff frequently wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots.
