VOLUNTEER AT THE LIBRARY

Help public and school libraries in find books that portray Indians as living, thriving cultures, not as victims of history.

The American Indian Library Association (an affiliate of the American Library Association) has two publications available to help with this.

• "I" is Not for Indian: The Portrayal of Native Americans in Books for Young People is a wonderful bibliography and guide on finding resources for young people.
• "I" is for Inclusion: The Portrayal of Native Americans in Books for Young People, expands on the first publication.

Both are available at www.ailanet.org/publications/index.htm

Print these and deliver them to the your kid's (or grandkid's) principal, school librarian, or to the librarian at your local library.

Offer to create a display at the library that highlights good books for children about American Indians or donate some of these books to the school or library.
