According to the President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, John Steele, there is a shortage of housing on Indian reservations across the United States. In the Testimony of the Honorable John Steele, Steele calls attention to the many housing issues that the residents of the Pine Ridge face. Among these are the major issues of overcrowding, the lack of home repair, homelessness, and lack of affordable housing.
Overcrowding is a constant problem and it is not uncommon to find a family of ten or more living in a small trailer on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Running Strong supports many programs to help the situation including:
• building new environmentally friendly homes suitable to life on the reservation
• homeowner education programs, including assistance with financing and credit counseling
• assistance with major home repairs.
Through our programs, Running Strong hopes to foster self-sufficiency, a sense of pride, and suitable housing for American Indian children.
